The hidden secrets of Friends, the sitcom that celebrates 30 years since its debut
The sitcom starring Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Mathew Perry, among others, was able to set a trend in the construction of its characters and the approach of a modern youth to the problems faced by the middle class. For this and more, it earned a place among the best comedy series in history.
Finally, despite the passage of time, there are secrets that were not publicly revealed about its production, and we will tell you some of them below.
- Its original title was not friends: Although the creators wanted to use just one word to name it, the first ideas were Friends Like Us, Six of One and Insomnia Cafe. But once the first episode was released, “Friends” was chosen.
- Never filmed in New York: Although the story was about a group of friends who lived there, everything was recorded in Los Angeles, at the Warner Bros. studios.
- Error in the departments: At first, the protagonists lived in a low-rise area, so they didn’t realize that the apartment numbers for the upper floors had to be double digits. And what started out as 4 and 5 became 19 and 20 respectively.
- Ellen DeGeneres was going to play Phoebe: She was the directors’ first choice, but she turned down the role and Lisa Kudrow was chosen instead.
- Joey’s Sling: In a scene between Joey and Chandler, Joey injured his shoulder when he fell to the floor, and he wasn’t supposed to wear a sling, but it was left in the scene.
- Phoebe’s pregnancy was real: Actress Lisa Kudrow became pregnant and instead of hiding it, the directors rewrote the script so that it would not affect the continuity of the series.
- Jennifer Aniston almost left the series: When the series began in 1994, Jennifer Aniston was working on Muddling Through and considered leaving the Friends project, although luckily that did not end up happening.
