Also, the Migratory crises have been exploited by criminal networks to act against the most vulnerable. Traffickers are increasingly abusing asylum systems. One of the most notorious examples is the disappearance of Nigerian girls and women who leave Libya in search of a better life, only to end up destined for sexual exploitation.
Why is the International Day against Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking commemorated every September 23?
This date was chosen since 1999 by the World Conference of the Coalition Against Human Trafficking in coordination with the Women’s Conference which took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in January of that same year. It was chosen in honour of the world’s first law against child prostitution passed on 23 September 1913.
This first law against prostitution, passed in Argentina, was the so-called “Palacios Law” drafted and promoted by the socialist deputy Alfredo Palacios.
