What was the revolver-chamber, the unusual invention of the last century?
This peculiar invention, known as “Revolver-camera”was developed in 1938 by A. Kurnick. The idea behind this device was Capture the precise moment before shootingmaking it a photographic witness to the target’s terror. The revolver had a camera built into the base of the barrel, capable of taking six photographs, one for each loaded bullet.
The device was fitted to standard police revolvers such as the Colt caliber 38which allowed criminals to be photographed just before pulling the trigger. Although it sounds like a concept straight out of a detective movie, the invention was never used in real situations, or at least there is no evidence to support this.
Few records survive of this controversial artifact. The only known photos come from a photographic archive in the Netherlands, where it is stored today. Despite its rarity, the revolver-chamber was voted one of the most interesting inventions of the past, along with other inventions such as wooden bathing suits and amphibious bicycles.
Over time, cameras built into weapons have evolved. Today, there are devices such as the Contour Roam, that records in high definition and can be mounted on rifles and other equipment. Although technology has advanced enormously, the concept of capturing images in the middle of the action still fascinates many, just as the revolver that shot photos did in 1938.
