FC Barcelona continues to win, even after Marc-André ter Stegen’s serious injury. A historic mark has already been broken. A new record is set to be broken next Saturday.
FC Barcelona’s winning streak continues even after the serious injury of its German national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. In the 1-0 victory against the Madrid suburban club FC Getafe, former Bundesliga star Robert Lewandowski scored Barça’s 6,500th goal in the history of the Spanish league.
What makes fans and officials particularly happy is that FC Barcelona reached this mark ahead of Spanish record champions and arch-rivals Real Madrid. After their 3-2 win against Deportivo Alaves, Real Madrid has scored 6,499 goals. Barça scored its 6,500 goals in just 3,035 league games, giving an average of 2.14 goals per game.
Flick is chasing Barcelona’s starting record
“I am very proud of my players,” said Barcelona’s German coach Hansi Flick, who is also close to equalling his club’s record for opening matches. Seven wins in the first seven games is the second-best record in the league history of the 27-time champions. The record is eight opening victories and was set in the 2013/14 season under Argentinian coach Gerardo Martino. Flick’s Barça can achieve this on Saturday evening with another win at CA Osasuna.
Long-time Polish national goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is now set to replace ter Stegen. The 34-year-old played alongside Lewandowski in the Polish national team for 15 years and had already ended his career this summer after being dropped from Juventus Turin.
After ter Stegen’s injury: Barça seeks experience
“I understand the difficult situation that arose after Marc-André ter Stegen’s injury. And I think it would be disrespectful on my part not to consider this option,” Szczesny told the newspaper “Sport”.
Although Flick did not want to comment on the reports about a transfer of the Polish goalkeeper, he indirectly confirmed his interest: “Iñaki Peña is 25 years old and the rest of the goalkeepers are very young. So we need to have experience if something happens,” said the former national coach.
