The Road Cycling World Championships in Zurich will continue despite the still very critical condition of junior rider Muriel Furrer. This was announced by the world association UCI. The decision was made after consultation and with the consent of Furrer’s family.
“The family wants the World Cup to continue as planned. Muriel Furrer’s health status remains very critical. The UCI, the Swiss association and the local organizing committee are extremely concerned,” the statement said.
Frequency of serious falls
The 18-year-old Swiss woman had a serious fall in the junior women’s race on Thursday and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. The crash happened in a forest on the lap on the north side of Lake Zurich that is run in all road races. According to the UCI, they are still looking for information about how the fall occurred.
There has been an increasing number of serious falls in cycling in recent times. In July, the Norwegian André Drege fell and died on the descent from the Großglockner during the Tour of Austria. In June 2023, the Swiss Gino Mäder succumbed to his injuries one day after a fall on the descent of the Albula Pass. Mäder’s death sparked a debate about safety in cycling.
