Smith’s death was confirmed by his children Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin. In a statement shared with UK media, they said: “He passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27 September.”

Gambon worked alongside Smith in 6 films in the saga: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011).

In February 2015, Gambon announced his retirement from the stage in an interview with The Sunday Times newspaper due to a memory loss problem that prevented him from memorizing the scripts. He stated that for some time he had only accepted short roles and always acted with a backup headset from which he could be reminded of his script lines if necessary. Michael Gambon died on September 27, 2023 from severe pneumonia.
