“For 6 years, groups calling themselves Mapuche have usurped and attacked the heritage of Argentines, ignoring the law and authority. The previous government’s solution was to give them land,” added the official who then concluded: “That’s over, we canceled that agreement“.

During the previous National administration, the former Secretary of Human Rights of the Nation, Horacio Pietragalla Corti, interceded before the judge Hugo Greca to stop the judicial process that National Parks had initiated in response to the seizure of the land. The proposal of Fernández’s management was to create a dialogue table between the Government and the Mapuche groups to reach an agreement, which provided for the transfer of the lands.

Within the framework of the “Third Meeting of the Dialogue Table with communities of the Mapuche and Mapuche Tehuelche People of Patagonia”, the previous Government had committed to recognizing “the REWE as a sacred site for the Mapuche People so that the Machi Betiana Colhuan could carry out her spiritual and medicinal tasks” and to grant permission to use the land located in the jurisdiction of the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Regarding this agreement, the current Minister of Justice was critical and assured: “for years groups calling themselves Mapuche have been forcibly taking public and private lands and far from applying the sanctions that the law provides for these crimes, the previous government chose to give them said State lands to these criminals.”

Furthermore, Cúneo Libarona stated that the Mapuche groups involved in the agreement “have been involved in repeated acts of usurpation and destruction of public and private property in our countryyes.” In this way, he exemplified that “in the year 2022 the group lof Lafken Winkul Mapu deliberately burned down the “Los Radales” cabin and a National Gendarmerie post in Río Negro.”

“These criminal actions attack not only the national heritage but also against the rights of all Argentines”said the minister.
