Budget 2025: governors will go to the Chamber of Deputies to demand adjustments in the provinces

The governors Martín Llaryora (Córdoba), Maximiliano Pullaro (Santa Fe), Alfredo Cornejo (Mendoza) and Rogelio Frigerio (Entre Ríos) will appear before the commission of Budget and Treasury of the Chamber of Deputies to expose the critical situation of the provinces in the face of the cut in funds and the drop in collections ahead of the debate on the 2025 Budget project in Congress.

The convocation of these governors of Peronism, the UCR and PRO will be in charge of the Federal Meeting block of Miguel Pichetto, which has already agreed with the provincial leaders to attend the commission chaired by José Luis Espert where today the 2025 Budget will begin to be analyzed with the presence of Carlos Guberman (Secretary of Finance) and Pablo Quirno (Secretary of Finance) in response to the refusal of the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, to attend Deputies to present on the initiative.

Anger of the governors

“They call us, they promise us and then they don’t fulfill anything.” The diagnosis, shared by the Juntos league of governors but also by Peronists like Llaryora or provincial leaders anchored in local parties such as Hugo Passalacqua (Misiones), Claudio Vidal (Santa Cruz) or Gustavo Saénz (Salta), reflects the fragile framework of La Libertad Avanza alliances in Congress. In fact, both Santa Cruz and Salta deputies who respond to their governors are counted for tomorrow’s session among the votes to reject Javier Milei’s veto of the educational financing law.

Therefore, given the lack of dialogue with the national government after the tense meeting that the governors held almost a month ago with Caputo and Guillermo Francos in Casa Rosada, the governors will go to Congress due to the cut in funds for public works, transportation, health, education, the fall of transfers through co-participation and the debt with the pension funds not transferred, a claim that escalated to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation. This discomfort of the governors, including Frigerio, Torres and the head of the Buenos Aires government, Jorge Macri, also explains their absence yesterday in the zoom led by Mauricio Macri to pressure his deputies to vote in favor of Milei’s veto on the universities.

Budget with adjustment

This request generates discomfort throughout the Juntos league. Nor do radicals like Pullaro or Cornejo consider it advisable to adhere to Milei’s veto and hand over the public education banner to Peronism that is beginning to regroup ahead of the election year. The governors are not only forced to apply a fiscal adjustment in their districts due to the financial asphyxiation of the Nation, but they are pressured, after failing to comply with all the provinces’ demands, to support the veto of the universities.

“The governors are already administering enough misery due to the cuts in public works without now giving Peronism the flag of public education. They ask them to sacrifice themselves for the national government but they do not comply,” complain among the dialogue-oriented governors in the face of to tomorrow’s session.

The note calling Llaryora, Pullaro, Cornejo and Frigerio will be presented in the next few hours in the Budget and Finance Commission by Federal Meeting with the signature of Pichetto, Emilio Monzó and Nicolas Massot, among others.
