The wheels are in motion to see a new series of films based on Middle-earth hit the screen and we should be able to revisit Rivendell and its brilliant lord, Elrond, who Weaving has played in six films within the franchise. But not anymore.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar about his current project Slow HorsesWeaving spoke about the possibility of returning to Middle Earth following the announcement of new films. “Personally, I’ve had enough of that. It was great to be in New Zealand off and on for a period of ten years. Then I came back and worked with the same team [el director Peter Jackson y el guionista Fran Walsh] on a project called Mortal Engines, which was going to be his next big franchise, but he died trying. “So I’ve had enough of Middle Earth and I don’t think anyone will ask me to do it again.”
The fantasy world Tolkien built is unlike any other, with a variety of fascinating characters and individuals, including Elrond. Weaving’s performance in the role is legendary, having first appeared as the Lord of Rivendell in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and subsequent productions, including The Hobbit trilogy. As for a possible return, Weaving says that even if he wanted to return to the role, Elrond’s immortality presents a major obstacle.
“Elrond is destined to be immortal and I am growing old. Elrond is one of the few characters, I think there are only three or four, who span across The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. But even when we reshot some parts of The Lord of the Rings, I was aware that it was older than before. And filming things in The Hobbit was starting to get a little silly. I loved being a part of that franchise, but I have absolutely no plans or desire to be a part of it ever again.“.
