Roger Federer has been retired from tennis for two years. Now Rafael Nadal follows him. The Swiss found touching words at the end of his career.
The Swiss Roger Federer reacted emotionally to the announced retirement of his long-time tennis opponent Rafael Nadal. “I always hoped this day would never come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love. It was an absolute honor,” wrote the 43-year-old 20-time Grand Slam winner -Winner of the Spaniard’s resignation video on Instagram.
In it, the 38-year-old Nadal announced that he would end his tennis career after the final round of the Davis Cup from November 19th to 24th in Malaga, Spain. Nadal won the title 22 times at one of the four Grand Slam tournaments Australian Open, Wimbledon, French Open and US Open. This makes him number two behind the Serbian Novak Djokovic and ahead of Federer. He was also at the top of the world rankings for a total of 209 weeks. “What a career, Rafa,” wrote Federer.
Federer and Nadal had faced each other in 40 duels, of which the Spaniard won 24. The Swiss ended his career after playing doubles with Nadal at the Laver Cup 2022.
