The viewpoint of the Retiro Monumental Tower reopened

The City finished repairing the Renaissance-style building and now you can once again enjoy the panoramic view offered by its sixth-floor viewpoint.

The Tower has seven floors, was donated by British residents to celebrate the Centennial of the first National Government and is in the center of the Argentine Air Force Plaza.

Also known as English Tower or Clock Towerthe Monumental Tower It is a privileged witness of Buenos Aires urban development. And for years it was the gateway to Buenos Aires because it is in front of the Retiro train terminals, the Port and the former Hotel de los Inmigrantes. The City finished repairing the Renaissance-style building and now you can once again enjoy the panoramic view offered by its sixth-floor viewpoint.

“This viewpoint is unique, it is in a central place in Retiro, with wonderful views. We invite everyone to visit it. The City has an incredible offer of recreational activities and its cultural identity gives us pride, it defines us. That is why we committed to recovering the Monumental Tower, these works were essential to be able to reopen it,” said the Head of Government, Jorge Macri, who went up to the Tower’s viewpoint, 40 meters high, on the Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity. He was accompanied by his wife and journalist, María Belén Ludueña, and the general director of Heritage, Museums and Historical Center, Pedro Aparicio.

The Tower has seven floors, was donated by British residents to celebrate the Centennial of the first National Government and is in the center of the Argentine Air Force Plaza. It opened on May 24, 1916 and was designed by architect Ambrose Macdonald Poynter. Clad with a combination of red bricks and carved stone, it is 60 meters high. The structure stands on a plinth with four stairs on each side and spillways in its corners. In these months, the City repaired the clock and the elevator, which were not working, and made building improvements. In addition, the entire electrical system was changed.

From the top you can see the views of the Plaza San Martín, the Kavanagh building, the Sheraton Hotel, the Ecological Reserve, the Río de la Plata, the Puerto Nuevo, the Retiro railway stations and many more views from the four points cardinals.

The clock is located on the 7th floor and for this reason the monument was also called the Clock Tower. It has four opaline quadrants 4.40 meters in diameter, with a pendulum that exceeds 4 meters and weighs 100 kg. The clock was manufactured by the Gillett & Johnston watchmaker, of Croydon England, in 1914, and is a smaller scale replica of the one on the tower of the Palace of Westminster in London (England), known as Big Ben.

You can now go up to the viewpoint every day of the week, Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission costs $750 for Argentine residents and $4,500 for non-residents. It is free for retirees and university students, people with disabilities, children under 12 years of age and groups of public school students. On Wednesdays access is free.
