Nations League: Spain narrowly beats Denmark – Switzerland is threatened with relegation

European soccer champions Spain win their first home game since the European Championship triumph in Berlin. For Switzerland, however, there is the next disappointment.

In the first home game since the European Championship triumph in Berlin, Spain’s national football team achieved a narrow victory in the Nations League. The defending champion won 1-0 (0-0) against Denmark in Murcia with a late goal from Martin Zubimendi in the 79th minute.

With their success, national coach Luis de la Fuente’s team pushed the northern Europeans off the top of the table in Group A4. Spain has seven points, Denmark remains on six points. As of now, both teams would reach the quarter-finals after the group phase was completed in November.

Portugal remains flawless

Spain’s neighbor Portugal also achieved a victory. The team around superstar Cristiano Ronaldo won against hosts Poland 3-1 (2-0) in Warsaw and is comfortably leading Group A1 with an impeccable record of three wins.

Ronaldo scored with a goal to make it 2-0 (37′). It was his 133rd goal for the national team, extending his world record. On the Polish side, star striker Robert Lewandowski remained mostly pale.

With another success next Tuesday in Scotland, Portugal could make their early quarter-final entry perfect. The Scots had lost 2-1 in Croatia a few hours earlier.

Switzerland is threatened with relegation

Switzerland has to fear more than ever about remaining in the top league of the Nations League. The Swiss lost their guest game in Serbia 0-2 (0-1) and are at the bottom of Group A4 with no points after three defeats.

An own goal from Gladbacher Nico Elvedi (45th + 1) and a goal from Aleksandar Mitrovic (61st) sealed the Swiss defeat, Breel Embolo also missed a penalty when the score was 0-2. In addition to Elvedi, Bundesliga professionals Granit Xhaka (Bayer Leverkusen) and Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund) were also in the Swiss starting line-up.
