England’s 3-1 win in the Nations League in Finland quickly no longer matters. In the debate about a possible new national coach, there is also speculation about two former Bayern coaches.
Interim coach Lee Carsley is apparently not granted a longer future as England’s national football coach. “This job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies and been through everything,” said the 50-year-old after the 3-1 mandatory win in the Nations League in Finland. “I’m just on my way there.” Former Bayern coaches Thomas Tuchel and Pep Guardiola have long been considered possible successor candidates for Gareth Southgate, who resigned after the European Championship.
Carsley will almost certainly be on the bench for the Nations League games in Greece (November 14th) and three days later for the final game against Ireland in the second-tier B League. “My brief is to play six games,” said Carsley, who is expected to return to the England Under-21 team. In March 2025, Harry Kane and Co. will begin qualifying for the XXL World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
High-profile candidates
It remains to be seen who will sit on the bench of the European runner-up. Tuchel or Guardiola are mentioned as possible candidates. Tuchel would be free after Bayern ended last summer. Guardiola is under contract with Manchester City until June 30, 2025 and would miss four qualifying games. Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe has also been considered a possible candidate. According to the British newspaper “The Telegraph”, the 46-year-old does not currently want to leave the Premier League club.
On Sunday, the English team showed at least one reaction in the Finnish capital a few days after the 1-2 disgrace against Greece at Wembley. Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold with a fantastic free kick and Declan Rice scored for the Carsley team. Behind the Greeks, England is only in second place in Group 2. Only the first team in the table gets promoted to the A-League.
