Ballon d’Or: Will Real Madrid boycott the football award?

Footballer of the Year
Real Madrid will probably come away empty-handed at the Ballon d’Or – and will boycott the gala

Apparently neither Vinícius Júnior nor Jude Bellingham will receive the Ballon d’Or. Now there are rumors that Real Madrid is boycotting the gala because of this.

Shortly before the ceremonial awarding of the Ballon d’Or to the best footballers, there were reportedly disagreements between the organizers and Real Madrid. The well-connected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano wrote hours before the award ceremony that the Brazilian Vinícius Júnior, who was considered the big favorite, had not won the journalists’ vote and was therefore not traveling to Paris for the award ceremony. “No one” from Real should come to the Théâtre du Châtelet – in protest?

In addition to Vinícius Júnior, the Englishman Jude Bellingham was also considered a possible winner. Toni Kroos, who ended his long, successful career after the home European Championships in the summer, is also on the list of 30 finalists. The 34-year-old former German international would not occupy any of the top places if the reports are correct. The gala is scheduled to start at 8:45 p.m., another favorite is the Spanish European champion Rodri from Manchester City.

Ballon d’Or for best footballer of the year

The Ballon d’Or has been awarded since 1956 and has long been the award for the best European player. From 2010 to 2015, the Ballon d’Or was awarded as a prize to the world footballer through a cooperation between the French media group Groupe Amaury and the world association Fifa. Since this year, the collaboration with the European Football Union has existed – the umbrella organization no longer has the sole election of Europe’s footballer of the year.
