Audience favorite Sinner plays for the title at the season finale

Local hero Jannik Sinner rushes into the final of the ATP Finals in Turin without losing a set. Now he’s up against Alexander Zverev’s conqueror for million-dollar prize money.

Audience favorite and top favorite Jannik Sinner can be crowned the winner of the tennis season finale for the first time after a dominant semi-final appearance. The Italian world number one defeated the Norwegian Casper Ruud 6:1, 6:2 in the semi-finals in Turin and, like last year, reached the final. Sinner will meet Taylor Fritz there on Sunday (6 p.m./Sky) in a new edition of the US Open final. The American had previously finished the year-end tournament for Alexander Zverev from Hamburg in three hard-fought sets in the first semi-final.

Sinner is having an outstanding year and was once again loudly celebrated by the audience after his victory over Ruud in just 69 minutes. The 23-year-old rose to number one in the world this season and celebrated his first two Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and the US Open.

Sinner won against Fritz in the group phase

He won the Grand Slam final in New York against Fritz just as confidently as he did in the group phase in Turin this week. Since he has raced through the tournament undefeated so far, the local hero now has prize money of 4.88 million US dollars at stake in the final.

Sinner lost the final of the ATP Finals last year against the Serbian record Grand Slam tournament winner Novak Djokovic. The defending champion qualified for the ATP Finals this time too, but withdrew due to an unspecified injury.

Sinner still faces a ban despite an acquittal after two positive doping tests. The World Anti-Doping Agency Wada recently appealed the case to the International Court of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne.
