A profession as old as the existence of humanity. Important in health and life in general.
Each November 21st is commemorated in Argentina as Nurses’ Day. This anniversary remembers the day on which the Federation of Catholic Nursing Professional Associations was founded, which brings together male and female nurses from all over the country and was held in 1953.

In addition, it coincides with the festival of Our Lady of Remedios, patron saint of the activity. In 1727, the Virgin was proclaimed “Minor Patroness of the City of Buenos Aires” to ward off typhus fever, which at that time caused a large number of deaths.

When is International Nurses Day
Unlike our country, in the rest of the world the profession is commemorated on May 12 in honor of Florence Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing. Florence was born in Florence in 1820 and died in London in 1910. She was also a writer and statesman.
The world knew her as The Lady with the Lamp after her participation in the Crimean War (1853) and for a chronicle published in The New York Times with a portrait of Florence carrying a lamp and caring for patients. And although in our country she is remembered in May, Nurse’s Day was established on November 21.
Why is the role of nurses so important?
The history of nursing is very old. Whenever there was someone weak enough to need help, there were nurses around them, regardless of whether they were considered that way or not by profession. It is not known when the profession emerged historically, but it is said that this role has existed since the Middle Ages, through figures such as wet nurses, midwives, nuns and other similar roles in society.
Then, after the First and Second World Wars, this role also began to include male participation. It is a job that helps physical and emotional well-being. In addition to the work of doctors, nurses go further, because they do emotional work that not everyone can do.
