Leipzig coach comforts linesman – why he burst into tears

RB Leipzig is eliminated early on matchday 6 of the Champions League. After the defeat against Aston Villa, coach Marco Rose created a touching scene despite the frustration.

The sixth defeat in the sixth game seals the Saxons’ elimination from the UEFA Champions League. Particularly bitter: RB Leipzig showed morale against Premier League club Aston Villa and fought back twice. In the end, coach Marco Rose’s team had to admit defeat 2:3 (1:1).

Marco Rose would have had every reason to be in a bad mood after the game. But the RB coach cheered up the linesman Alessandro Giallatini instead. The 49-year-old Italian burst into tears after the final whistle. What had happened?

Rose: “We brought him a jersey”

“I asked him what was going on. He said that he had played his last game today, he is 49 years old,” Rose told the “Bild” newspaper. The coach and his team even gave the linesman a spontaneous farewell gift: “We just brought him a jersey,” said Rose.

According to Rose, Giallatini was very emotional. The RB coach also had some advice for him: “I congratulated him and told him that he now has a little more time and should use it profitably so that he can take care of his family.”

Giallatini has been a FIFA referee since 2013. He worked as an assistant at major tournaments, such as the 2020 European Championships and the 2022 World Cup.

After the Champions League exit: RB challenged in the league

The fact that this beautiful moment occurred between Rose and Giallatini is not a given given Leipzig’s sporting situation. Before being eliminated from the Champions League, the Saxons had recently stumbled in the Bundesliga. There was only one win in the last five games.

At least RB has not yet lost touch with the top of the table and is currently in fourth place. After being eliminated from the premier class, Rose and his team can now concentrate on the league again. “We have to pick ourselves up and have another difficult task ahead of us on Sunday against Frankfurt,” summed up the coach.
