DFB wants to name Supercup after Franz Beckenbauer

Franz Beckenbauer has been honored several times for his life’s work – with street names and soon with a statue. And the DFB already has the next idea up its sleeve.

The question of how the DFB and German football honor the late Franz Beckenbauer seems to have been answered: According to a media report, the DFB under President Bernd Neuendorf and the German Football League have agreed to name the German Supercup after the football legend. In the Supercup, champions and cup winners compete against each other before the start of the season. The next game is scheduled to take place on August 15, 2025.

The report from “” states that the DFL, which organizes the Supercup, has “agreed in principle” with the DFB and that only “formalities” remain to be clarified. Plans to name the DFB Cup or the campus after Beckenbauer were scrapped for various reasons.

FC Bayern honors Franz Beckenbauer in a variety of ways

Beckenbauer died on January 7, 2024 after a long illness. His club, FC Bayern, cherishes the memory of its greatest footballer and former honorary president in many ways. He released an “Kaiser” collection for supporters, a statue will soon be erected in front of the Allianz Arena and the city of Munich named a street near the stadium after the two-time world champion. Finally, however, there was the greatest honor: at the annual general meeting, the members decided to no longer award Beckenbauer’s jersey number 5.

Wearing the DFB jersey, Beckebauer won the home World Cup as captain in 1974 and the European Championship in Belgium two years earlier. The “Emperor” was on the pitch in a total of 103 international matches, including the “game of the century” in 1970 against Italy and the “Night of Belgrade” in 1976 against what was then Czechoslovakia. With FC Bayern Munich, to which the Munich native remained loyal from 1964 to 1977, Beckenbauer celebrated numerous successes at national and international level. He received the Ballon d’Or twice as the world’s best soccer player. After guest appearances at Hamburger SV and New York Cosmos, Beckenbauer ended his active career in 1983.
