Remote wedding: HSV professional Bakery Jatta gets married 5,000 kilometers away
Bakery Jatta from the second division soccer team Hamburger SV got married. The ceremony was unusual for German conditions, as he himself reported.
Right in the middle, but not there: HSV player Bakery Jatta has been married since St. Nicholas Day. But the longest-serving professional from the Hamburg second division football team was not even present at the actual wedding ceremony in his homeland of Gambia, some 5,000 kilometers away.
The 26-year-old reported to the “Hamburger Abendblatt” that his colleagues were happy for him, but also made jokes. “It’s not normal here to get married but not be present at the wedding,” he said, given the wedding circumstances, which are unusual for Germany.

“In our culture you can get married even if you’re not there,” explained Jatta. Of course he would have preferred to be there, “but as a professional footballer far away from home, that was unfortunately not possible.” That’s why his family and the family of his wife Isatou Bojang planned a large, Muslim ceremony “at which the marriage became official – even without my presence.”

But it was not an arranged marriage, emphasized Jatta. His wife comes from the same village as him. “In our case, our hearts chose the wedding and fortunately our families did too.”

After the last game of the year on December 21st against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, he traveled to his homeland and saw his wife. The couple wants to live together in Hamburg soon.
Jatta came to Germany as a refugee in 2015. He has been at HSV since 2016. He has a contract with the club until June 2029. So far he has played 215 competitive games for the professionals. On Saturday (1 p.m./Sky) he will play in the 2nd league with HSV against SSV Ulm.
