World Cup in London
Darts player bursts into tears and is mocked by the audience
Bitter moments at the Darts World Cup for Cameron Menzies: The Scot suddenly began to cry – and apparently it wasn’t just his defeat that was behind it.
Cameron Menzies had big plans for his appearance at the Darts World Cup. But in the match against Leonard Gates, the Scot was unable to deliver his performance – and was overwhelmed by his emotions.
Even during the match, the 35-year-old always seemed emotionally touched. The more arrows missed, the more insecure he seemed to become. In between, there were mocking cheers from the audience in the legendary Pally Ally when he missed his throws. When the 3-1 defeat was certain and his first round exit was sealed, Menzies could no longer hold back his tears. His opponent had to hug him and comfort him.
Darts World Cup: Cameron Menzies cries after disappointing defeat
Menzies has recently started working with a mental coach as he has lost his nerve in important matches in the past. But his tears at the World Cup apparently had more to do with his disappointing performance. According to British media, Menzies posted a picture of his seriously ill father on social media after the defeat. Menzies wrote: “I didn’t want to post that. My father, my hero.” He then deleted the entry again. Menzies receives support from his girlfriend Fallon Sherrock, who is also one of the most famous darts players in the world.
His opponent Leonard Gates, a truck driver from Texas, showed himself to be a sportsman and encouraged his opponent after the match. “I told him: ‘Use this energy and look at it positively. Play a lot more darts and show what you can do’.” Menzies actually went into the duel as the clear favorite. “I hope I’ve said a few things to him that can help him – both in darts and in his life,” said Gates.
The Darts World Cup in London runs until January 3rd. Six Germans are also represented in the field of participants.
