Mourning for winter sports athlete
At the age of 26: snowboarder dies in avalanche accident
The Swiss snowboarder Sophie Hediger wanted to win a medal at the World Championships in March. Shortly before Christmas, the 26-year-old died in an avalanche accident.
The Swiss snowboard crossers mourn Sophie Hediger. The 26-year-old athlete died on Monday in an avalanche accident in Arosa. This was announced by the Swiss Ski Association, citing Hediger’s family. “For the Swiss-Ski family, a dark shadow has fallen over the Christmas period with the tragic death of Sophie Hediger. We are incredibly sad. We will honor Sophie’s memory,” said Walter Reusser, CEO Sport at Swiss-Ski.
Hediger took part in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing and was able to establish himself in the World Cup with two podium finishes last winter. In her last race on December 14th she came ninth. Her big dream was to win a medal at the World Championships in Engadin in March.
Resuscitation aborted unsuccessfully
According to information from the Graubünden police, Hediger skied on the closed Black Diamond piste accompanied by another snow athlete. “They left the closed piste and the woman was caught in an avalanche on a slope. Her companion notified the rescue workers and went to search for the buried victim,” the police wrote.
The athlete was therefore able to be rescued from the snow in the afternoon. According to police, resuscitation had to be stopped at the avalanche field without success.
