In Netflix premiere: Mahomes leads Kansas City to victory
NFL champion Kansas City Chiefs can celebrate an unchallenged victory on Christmas. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes shows his qualities in the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In the first NFL game on the streaming provider Netflix, champions Kansas City Chiefs celebrate a clear victory. The team around star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, which has long since qualified for the playoffs, won 29:10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day. The game was broadcast live and exclusively on Netflix.
For the Chiefs it was the 15th win in the 16th game of the season, in which Mahomes set the tone early with a touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy. In the end, the 29-year-old quarterback recorded three touchdown passes and threw for a total of 320 yards.
The streaming giant also secured the broadcast rights for the second duel on Boxing Day between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans. A performance by US musician Beyoncé (43) was planned for the half-time break at the Texans stadium.
Netflix and sports rights
Netflix paid the NFL $150 million for the broadcast rights to the two games on Christmas Day. Netflix will also show games at Christmas next year. In Germany, the NFL games are otherwise broadcast on RTL.
Netflix is noticeably expanding its sports offerings for its over 280 million subscribers in over 190 countries. The 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cups will be broadcast exclusively on the streaming provider in the USA. According to the company, around 60 million households worldwide tuned in for the show fight between former boxing world champion Mike Tyson and Jake Paul in mid-November. However, the streaming giant subsequently had to admit transmission problems.
Netflix has also invested a lot of money in sports documentaries such as “The Last Dance” about basketball star Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, “Tour de France”, “Break Point” and “Formula 1: Drive to Survive”.
