Swiss Monney wins downhill in Bormio
For the first time in his career, Alexis Monney wins a World Cup race. One day after Cyprien Sarrazin’s serious fall in training, the German ski racers have no chance of making it to the podium.
Alexis Monney won the Bormio downhill one day after ski racer Cyprien Sarrazin suffered a serious training crash. In Italy, the 24-year-old Swiss triumphed in a World Cup race for the first time in his career in 1:53.43 minutes. His teammate Franjo von Allmen came in second, 0.24 seconds behind Monney. Cameron Alexander of Canada came third.
The Swiss star Marco Odermatt was unlucky on his trip. His airbag went off in a dangerous situation. The Olympic champion had to be content with fifth place.
“I think that with a mistake like that it’s very good that the airbag opens. That was anything but a natural movement,” Odermatt told ZDF. “Sure, there are better things to do if you stay on your feet. But I’m glad I got there safely.”
Jocher as the best DSV starter in 13th place
The trio from the German Ski Association played no role in the decision for the top positions, although Simon Jocher made people sit up and take notice with 13th place. Luis Vogt took World Cup points in 21st place, Romed Baumann was clearly left behind in 43rd place.
The day before, the Frenchman Sarrazin had lost control on a bump during training and slid into a safety net with enormous force. A subdural hematoma, a hemorrhage near the brain, was subsequently diagnosed in a hospital. According to the French association, the 30-year-old had a successful head operation that night.
This time too there were a few failures on the demanding route. However, apart from minor injuries, the fallen riders remained uninjured.
