The German sports moments of the year
Home European Championships in handball and football, Olympic Games, Paralympics: From a German perspective, the 2024 sporting year had spectacular moments in store. The highs and lows in pictures.
Sports fans got their money’s worth in 2024. Two German teams, the national handball and football teams, were allowed to host a European Championship in their own country. While both teams would have liked to have achieved more, they left impressive moments that will stay with us.
For example, there is the handball player’s world record game in front of 50,000 spectators. But also the missed hand penalty at the European Football Championship in the quarter-finals between Germany and Spain. Toni Kroos, the most successful German player of all time, also ended his career. And fans had to say goodbye to several football legends forever: Franz Beckenbauer, Andreas Brehme, Christoph Daum and Willy Lemke died in 2024.
A pick-me-up: After eleven years in a row, FC Bayern did not win the Bundesliga. Instead, the much-lauded coaching star Xabi Alonso lifted Bayer Leverkusen to the German football throne for the first time in the club’s history – and also won the DFB Cup with the Werkself. Thomas Tuchel, however, failed as Bayern coach and was fired.
Athlete of the Year 2024
At the Olympic Games, Oliver Zeidler (rowing), Darja Varfolomeev (rhythmic gymnastics) and the 3×3 basketball players won the gold medal for Germany – and were named “Sportsman of the Year”.

A successful German athlete said goodbye after the Olympics: tennis player Angelique Kerber ended her career. The 36-year-old won Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open and was number one in the world rankings for 34 weeks. In the future, she will work as a consultant at the German Tennis Federation (DTB).
There were also successes for German athletes to celebrate outside of the Olympic Games. The triathlete Patrick Lange won the Ironman in Hawaii for about the third time.
