As reported by The Washington Post, Carter died at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he was receiving palliative care after he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of skin cancerwith tumors that had spread to the liver and brain. Although he had initially responded well to treatment, In February 2023, his family announced his admission to palliative care.
Jimmy Carter’s political career
After having attended the United States Naval Academy and having served in the Marine Until 1953, Carter began his political career as a senator in the Georgia General Assembly between 1962 and 1966. In 1971 it became the governor of that same state. During his tenure, he promoted progressive policies in civil rights and government reforms.
Despite not having a great level of exposure at the national level, he ran for president in the 1974 elections and took advantage of Richard Nixon’s resignation due to the scandal of Watergate for base his campaign on regaining the trust of the electorate in the government.

Although he did not achieve electoral victory in 1974, he finally prevailed against the then Republican president Gerald Ford and became the 39th president of the United States.
He headed the White House between 1977 and 1981. and the achievements of his government include the partial deregulation of air, rail and truck transportation; the appointment of women and members of ethnic minorities to the judiciary and other positions; reserving millions of acres in Alaska as national parks or wildlife refuges; the pardon of most of those who evaded military service during the Vietnam War; the creation of the Departments of Energy and Education; the ratification of the Panama Canal treaties, the normalization of relations with China and the historic Camp David agreements, in which Egypt recognized the State of Israel. Outside doors, he had an important role in promoting human rights policies in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, countries governed by military dictatorships.
After leaving the White House, Carter remained involved in politics and community relations. He founded the Carter Center, dedicated to promote democracy, combat disease and improve quality of life in developing countries. He also worked with the Habitat for Humanity organization to build homes.
For his humanitarian and diplomatic work, in 2002, Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize.
