Money problems
Played out! Dani Olmo is no longer allowed to play for FC Barcelona
It’s a very bitter pill that the record club FC Barcelona has to swallow. Star player Dani Olmo is not allowed to continue playing for the Catalans. The reason: money worries.
FC Barcelona had tried to prevent it for a long time – without success. The Spanish football league has refused to allow the football club to register European football champion Dani Olmo for the rest of the season. The league announced this. The reason for the decision is the Catalans’ financial problems. FC Barcelona did not present an alternative to meet the conditions for registration. A new license for Pau Victor was also rejected.
The club had previously tried in vain to force registration in court. Media reported that FC Barcelona was trying to raise 100 million euros from the sale of VIP boxes in the modernized Camp Nou stadium to an Arab investment fund in order to solve the problem.
The future of European champion Olmo is uncertain
What will happen next with Olmo remains to be seen. Without registration he is no longer part of the squad and is likely to move. FC Barcelona, where former national coach Hansi Flick has been the coach since this season, said it has applied for a license from the Spanish Football Association for Olmo and Pau Victor.
At the same time, the Catalan club denied in a statement before the league decision that it had received a moratorium on registration from another body. The newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”, citing association sources, wrote that no association license could be applied for without the league’s consent. FC Barcelona may now try to achieve registration during the transfer period, which runs until the beginning of February.
FC Barcelona signed Olmo from RB Leipzig in the summer for an estimated 55 million euros. The 26-year-old received a contract there until June 2030. He posted a broken heart on X on New Year’s Eve. His agent Andy Bara previously told Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano that Olmo wanted to stay at Barcelona. He made this decision because he wanted to play for Barça. “We are not considering any other option,” emphasized Bara.
