Darts World Cup
Van Gerwen in London in the semi-finals – Price is eliminated
The classic between Van Gerwen and Price is canceled at the World Cup in Ally Pally. The Dutchman survives a spectacular game.
World-class professional Michael van Gerwen is still on course for his fourth title at the Darts World Championships in London. The 35-year-old Dutchman defeated England’s Callan Rydz 5-3 on New Year’s Day and is in the last four for the ninth time. In the high-class match there were a total of 31 shots with 180 points.
Rydz, who played an outstanding tournament last year and defeated several seeded professionals in Dimitri van den Bergh (Belgium) and Martin Schindler (Germany), even won more legs than his rival.
“Mighty Mike”, as van Gerwen is called, was scheduled for the afternoon session for the first time in over eleven years and 53 World Cup matches. With the score at 2:2, Rydz was close to taking the lead. But the Englishman repeatedly missed great chances on the double fields.
Boos for provocative Price
However, the dream semi-final between van Gerwen and his long-term rival Gerwyn Price, longed for by many fans, has been cancelled. The 39-year-old Welshman previously lost 3:5 to Chris Dobey from England. The muscleman had already led 2-0. Price made numerous missed throws to the double fields, from which Dobey benefited. The Welshman repeatedly puffed himself up in front of the fans in the Ally Pally and received massive boos for it.
The two semi-finals will take place on Thursday evening (8.30 p.m./Sport1 and DAZN). German representatives will no longer be there in the new year. Ricardo Pietreczko was the last participant to be eliminated in the round of 16.
