Football fans in England are allowed to drink beer at the game again – on a trial basis

In England’s football stadiums it has been illegal to drink alcohol in the stands during games for decades. That should now change – but initially only as a test.

In English professional football, it will be allowed to drink alcohol in the stadium stands during a game for the first time in 40 years. The measure will initially be tested at several home games of selected clubs in the second division of English women’s football. Bristol City, Newcastle United, Southampton and Birmingham City are taking part in a pilot project.

Alcohol ban in stadium stands since 1985

However, it could be a long time before this is allowed again in the English Premier League. Since 1985, drinking within sight of the pitch has been banned by law in the top five leagues of English men’s football. The regulation was enforced by the conservative government at the time in order to counteract the hooliganism that was emerging at the time.

Alcohol will probably also be banned at the World Cup in Saudi Arabia

Alcohol may be sold and consumed in the hallways, hospitality rooms and other designated areas in the stadium. However, you cannot take alcoholic drinks into the stands while the game is in progress. The legislation does not apply to women’s football, but leagues have nevertheless adopted the rule.

England’s league wants to first evaluate the findings

The Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) has announced that it will first evaluate the findings of the pilot project and then decide on further steps. Managing director Nikki Doucet had already announced in October that they wanted to give fans the choice, but at the same time maintain security in the stadium. The first games with alcohol permits will take place in Bristol and Southampton on January 19th.
