Werder still gives up the win against Heidenheim
Heidenheim is not for Werder Bremen. Even at the third attempt there was no victory.
Werder Bremen remains winless against 1. FC Heidenheim in the Bundesliga. The Green-Whites couldn’t make it past 3:3 (1:1) in their home stadium because Leo Scienza equalized for the guests with a wonderful free kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time. This meant that Werder had to accept a setback in the fight for international places.
In front of 39,350 spectators in the Weserstadion, the Austrian Marco Grüll looked like the match winner for the North Germans in a turbulent game. The summer newcomer scored twice (1st and 79th minute). Marvin Ducksch was also successful for coach Ole Werner’s team (56th). Jan Schöppner (30th) and Luca Kerber (61st) each scored the interim equalizer for the Heidenheimers who never gave up. In the end, Scienza caused a big celebration in Heidenheim.
“I think we don’t have a problem with self-confidence. We know what we can do,” said Werder coach Werner after the clear defeat in Leipzig at the start of the year. And in fact there was initially no sign of uncertainty among the Green-Whites. Grüll gave the hosts the lead in the first minute and thus ensured a perfect start.
Werder had everything under control after that and were unlucky that Ducksch only hit the crossbar in the eleventh minute. The guests, on the other hand, initially had big problems. Probably also because coach Frank Schmidt had to change his team again shortly before kick-off. Marnon Busch slipped into the starting lineup for Jonas Föhrenbach. To make matters worse, Niklas Dorsch had to leave the field after nine minutes due to an injury.
Heidenheim takes advantage of Bremen’s negligence
Bremen continued to control the action and missed the 2-0 through Mitchell Weiser. However, the North Germans became a bit careless after that – Heidenheim equalized out of nowhere. At first Paul Wanner was denied by Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, but Schöppner shot the ball beautifully into the Bremen goal in the follow-up shot.
Werder was now completely out of control. Just a minute later, Frans Krätzig missed Heidenheim’s lead, and Zetterer made a strong save. Shortly before the break, Marvin Pieringer should have given the guests the lead, but shot past the Bremen goal from close range.
Werder’s lead doesn’t last long again
After the break, Werder got off to a better start again. After a cross from Weiser, Heidenheim’s goalkeeper Kevin Müller directed the ball right in front of Ducksch’s feet – the Bremen striker gratefully accepted the mistake and put SVW back in the lead.
But again the lead didn’t last long because Bremen became careless. Kerber thanked him and scored Heidenheim’s equalizer again. After that the game went back and forth. Grüll put Werder back in front with his second goal, but that wasn’t enough for Bremen either. Last season, Bremen even lost both games against Heidenheim.
