For the first time in round three: Lys continues the tennis fairy tale
The wonderful days in Melbourne continue for Eva Lys. The tennis player is celebrating the greatest success of her career. The fans even dedicate their own song to the Hamburg native.
As a reward for the greatest success of her career to date, Eva Lys received a warm hug from her little sister while she was still at her seat. The Hamburg native continued her tennis fairytale in an impressive manner at the Australian Open and reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. The 23-year-old deservedly won 6:1, 3:6, 6:4 against Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva and can hope for more wonderful days in Melbourne.
She was “wordlessly happy,” said Lys at Eurosport. The loud cheering on the next court, number 6, carried them to victory: “When you experience it for the first time, you have no words for it. I enjoyed every second.”
Some followers even created new lyrics to the tune of the DJ Ötzi song “Hey Baby”: “Hey Eva, I wanna know, if you be my girl.” Lys was impressed: “When people sing about you in the chorus, that’s a total bonus.”
The world ranking 128. had actually already failed in the qualification and only officially slipped into the main draw as a lucky loser 15 minutes before her first match. On Saturday she will play against the Romanian Jaqueline Cristian or Lucia Bronzetti from Italy for a place in the round of 16.
Powerful and strong nerves
Lys continued against Gracheva exactly where she left off in her unexpected opening win against Australian Kimberly Birrell. With powerful groundstrokes, the Hamburg native dominated against the world number 69 and hit nine winning shots in the first set alone.
Physically, Lys, who had made public a rheumatic autoimmune disease last year, appeared to be in top shape. She didn’t allow herself to be distracted by the loud noise on the next square, number 6, near the train tracks.
After winning a break and taking a 2-0 lead in the second set, Lys seemed to start thinking a bit. The error rate was suddenly significantly higher. In the third round she caught herself again and an open exchange of blows developed with the German finishing better after 1:57 hours. National coach Torben Beltz, who looks after Lys on site after her father’s departure, rose from his seat and applauded.
Altmaier fails because of old star
Daniel Altmaier (26), however, was eliminated in the second round against a French veteran. The Kempen native had to admit defeat to 38-year-old Gaël Monfils 5:7, 3:6, 6:7 (3:7).
This means that only Alexander Zverev is represented among the German tennis men. Second in the world rankings, he will meet Briton Jacob Fearnley on Friday (3:30 a.m. CET). Jan-Lennard Struff, Yannick Hanfmann and Dominik Koepfer were already eliminated before Altmaier.
