Payroll
This is how much German handball players earn from their clubs
At the Handball World Cup, the focus is on the DHB stars. If you win the tournament, you will receive an attractive bonus. What are the salaries of German players in general?
Handball stars receive significantly lower salaries than professional footballers. That’s why many of them also complete training or study alongside their career. Nevertheless, Wolff, Golla and Co. still earn significantly more at their clubs than the average citizen, as the payroll of the DHB players shows.
There are also various bonuses in the league and tournaments. According to the DPA news agency, national coach Alfred Gislason’s team would receive around 475,000 euros for the overall victory at the current Handball World Cup in Croatia, Norway and Denmark. “This is a team bonus, not a per capita bonus like in football,” said DHB President Andreas Michelmann to the Editorial Network Germany (RND). An additional incentive to give everything in the games.
These are the DHB top earners
In the Bundesliga, which is considered the best handball league in the world, MT Melsungen, THW Kiel and SC Magdeburg are the top addresses when it comes to salaries, according to the RND. While some clubs only pay normal gross salaries, other clubs entice players with tax-free surcharges such as travel costs, expenses and Sunday, public holiday or night surcharges.
All German national players currently play in the Bundesliga. Goalkeeper Andreas Wolff (THW Kiel) and DHB captain Johannes Golla (SG Flensburg-Handewitt, soon MT Melsungen) collect the most money from their clubs. Golla receives 48,000 euros a month and Wolff even earns 50,000 euros. This makes the 33-year-old goalkeeper the top earner in the German team.
The young players Juri Knorr (Rhein-Neckar Löwen) and Julian Köster (VfL Gummersbach), both 24 years old, take on a lot of responsibility in their clubs and in the national team – and are therefore already among the top earners. Marko Grgic from ThSV Eisenach currently receives the least with around 13,000 euros gross per month. But the 19-year-old will also probably make salary increases in the future.
Handball star Wolff collects thirteen times more than the average citizen
