Gislason wants to fulfill a contract: “Because I love handball”

Alfred Gislason’s contract as national coach of the German handball players runs until February 2027. After the bitter World Cup defeat against Portugal, the Icelander comments on its future.

Despite the disappointing departure in the World Cup quarter-finals, Alfred Gislason has confirmed that he wanted to fulfill his contract as the national coach of the German handball players. “Yes, why not? I have a lot of fun with the team. I do this job because I love handball and I am proud to work for Germany,” said the Icelander in the morning after 30:31 after extension against Portugal.

The German Handball Association (DHB) had extended the contract with the 65-year-old until February 2027 last year. Gislason’s working paper will include the home World Cup in two years. “I will continue in handball, I always said that – wherever,” announced the national coach with a smile.

Gislason thanks the team

Gislason took over the office in spring 2020 and celebrated its greatest successes last year at the home European Championship and the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Paris. The DHB coach does not regard the quarter-final at the World Cup as a step backwards in the development of the young German team.

“I thanked the team for this month. We had a difficult month. I just found that they dealt with these problems outstandingly,” said Gislason with a view to the many injury -related and health failures.
