After an EM coup: ice skating duo Hase/Wolodin before a golden future?

Germany has a new figure skating couple: Minerva Hase and Nikita Wolodin get EM gold. The next big tasks are already waiting for them. And they don’t just have it in terms of sport.

After the European Championship Triumph von Tallinn, the native Russian Nikita Wolodin and his figure skating partner Minerva Hase full of lucky feelings of happiness, as if he wanted to say to all observers: I also look away from the ice surface.

Because after the gold medal at the European Championship, Hase and Wolodin want to fulfill the common dream of the Olympic Games. In almost exactly one year they will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. With or without rabbit and wolodine in the pair run competition? That still decides.

The sporting qualifications will increase at the World Cup in Boston in the USA at the end of March and should be a crack for Hase/Wolodin. As a European champion, the two finally belong to the favorite group. “At the moment we are trying not to think about medals at World Championships,” says Hase.

Hase/Wolodin want to increase at World Cup

The goal is to increase again compared to the performance at the European Championship, explains the Berlin native. “We still have some time until the World Championships. So the main goal is to eradicate the mistakes we made here.”

The main competitors will again include the Italian duo Sara Conti/Niccolò Macii, with which Hase and Wolodin fought a heartbeat final in Estonia’s capital. Both couples made themselves smaller mistakes in both the short program and in the shortage – in the end the Germans referred their competitors to second place with almost six points.

Immediately after the freestyle, she was unsure whether the appearance was enough for victory, says Hase, who, after the decision, broke out in tears with joy. All of this will only be done in a few days, said Wolodin.

German test as the greatest obstacle to the Olympic dream

In order to be able to participate in the Olympic Games, the Russian, in particular, still has to keep up. The 25-year-old, who has been a sporty duo with a rabbit since 2022, lack the German passport in order to be able to participate in the major event. The biggest hurdle is the mandatory German test, which he wants to face for the first time in May.

If Wolodin passes the test, he could only write the success story with rabbit at the World Cup and then at the Olympics. In Tallinn they ensured the largest German figure skating triumph for almost seven years when Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot became Olympic champion and also world champions. For the last time gold for Germany at an EM, Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy 2011.

Title as an upswing? Hope for more TV times and offspring

Success is particularly good for the German ice skating union after Kristina Isaev had left the women and Nikita Starostin with the men in Tallinn after disappointing performance. Running, on the other hand, is the ray of hope: In addition to the rabbit/Wolodine, Annika Hocke/Robert Kunkel took eighth place. Letizia Roscher and Luis Schuster became twelfth.

Hase and Wolodin promise an upswing from their coup after the sport in this country in this country – also due to the lack of success – has hardly been considered in many. “We just hope that the gold medal will make our sport more attractive in Germany again,” says Hase.

The 25 -year -old primarily wants more television times and children who can get excited about figure skating – in the hope that these boys and girls sing the national anthem as passionately as Nikita Wolodin and herself.
