Ski team threatens Fiasko: Previous Dürr misses medal

Even the stricken Lena Dürr in slalom cannot redeem the German team at the Alpine Ski World Cup. One last hope remains. Switzerland continues to dominate on the Zwölferkogel.

With the last strength, Lena Dürr dragged himself out of the target area. The large slalom hope also missed the first German medal at the Alpine Ski World Cup in Austria. In terms of health, Dürr drove to eighth place in the victory of the Swiss Camille Rast. They separated 1.13 seconds from a podium. The first alpine World Cup without precious metal has been threatened by the German Ski Association before the final men’s slalom on Sunday. Most recently, this happened in the Swedish area in 2007.

“The grains left me down,” said Dürr. In addition to her physical condition, she also made the difficult slopes. Silver went to Rast’s teammate Wendy Holdener (+0.46 seconds), Katharina Liensberger secured bronze for hosts Austria (+1.32). As a fifth, US star Mikaela Shiffrin did not make it to the podium and missed another record in the ski history books.

Spent in bed all Friday

Dürr was one of the greatest hopes of hope in the German team in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. However, their preparation for the slalom was anything but optimal. She was very tired after the giant slalom on Thursday and was in bed all Friday, the athlete from SV Germering reported. But she did not want to use this as an excuse, so Dürr.

The conditions were “completely, very special”, said the 33-year-old. In the first run she was not caught with the course of the course. Her gap to the leading rest was 1.93 seconds at halftime. That was no longer possible in the second round. Her teammates Emma Aicher and Jessica Hilzinger had already left the first run.

Goaling for the time being

“We missed the objective we had to drive the medals here,” said DSV sports director Wolfgang Maier in a preliminary World Cup rescue. At least that applies at the moment. Linus Straßer can still avert the complete zero number in the slalom on Sunday (9.45/1:15 p.m./ZDF and Eurosport). In view of strong competition, he needs a cream day to reach the podium.

For Dürr, however, it was also a difficult World Cup, said Maier. The slalom bronze medalist from two years ago – apart from the giant slalom – the focus was always on. Both in the team competition at the start and in the team combination on Tuesday, however, she failed.

Switzerland already with twelve medals

Shiffrin, which had fallen in Killington two and a half months ago and had to be operated on in the abdomen because of a stab wound, missed her 16th World Cup medal in the slalom. In this statistics, she continues to share the top with the German Christl Cranz, which dominated in the 1930s.

The Swiss are experiencing true ski festival. They have already won twelve medals at the Zwölferkogel – including four golden ones.
