Zverev goes “Ans limit” in Rio and is in the quarter -finals
For the German tennis ace Alexander Zverev, the journey continues at the clay court tournament in Rio de Janeiro. In the case of humid conditions against a “very good opponent”, however, it only works over the fight.
Germany’s tennis star Alexander Zverev is in the quarterfinals at the sandplace tournament in Rio de Janeiro. However, the world ranking second from Hamburg had to perform another effort again at 7: 6 (7: 1), 7: 6 (8: 6) against the Kazakh Alexander Schewtschenko in the extreme heat of Rio. While it is the sixth quarter -finals for the top seed Zverev on his favorite covering in a row, his upcoming opponent Francisco Comesana is among the top eight for the first time.
“Under the conditions here, it was a good match. Definitely an improvement to yesterday,” Zverev said after the almost two and a half hour fight at almost 30 degrees Celsius: “You have to go to your physical limit.”
An ungrateful game for Zverev
As with the arduous start against BU YUNCHAKETE (7: 6, 6: 4), Zverev also started strong against Schewtschenko. After a competitive first service of the Kazakh, at the end of which the first break was achieved, Zverev brought his own service to zero. However, errors in the Hamburgers crept in again and again, even if the first surcharge was a little more common than the day before.
An ungrateful game developed for Zverev, which earned a huge amount of break opportunities, but was just able to convert a quarter into game gains (3/12). To do this, his counterpart took out every mistake in German mercilessly – and so Zverev suddenly stood with his back to the wall at 3: 5. But the Hamburger did not get on and secured the set win with a dominant tie -break.
Four points in a row for victory
In the second round, too, it initially looked good for the German figurehead in the 4: 1, but again it set the re-break. Zverev later reported that they had “problems with breathing” at this point. When there was already set balls for Schewtschenko in the Tiebreak, Zverev stormed to the smooth victory with four points in a row.
In the quarterfinals on Friday night against Comesana, a more confident appearance should now be found. The Argentinian, number 86 of the ATP ranking, had prevailed in a marathon match with three tiebreaks against number six Chilenen Nicolas Jarry.
