They sanctioned a referee for asking Messi an autograph

The Concacaf sanctioned the Mexican referee Marco Antonio Ortiz Nava for requesting an autograph from Lionel Messi during the game of Concacaf Champions League between Kansas City and Inter Miami.

The entity considered that the judge breached the rules of the Code of Conduct, so he decided to apply an exemplary sanction before his actions.

According to the official statement, “after an investigation, Concacaf could know that the referee approached the player to request an autograph for a relative with special needs.” However, the organization determined that “the actions of the referee are not aligned with the code of conduct of the Confederation for game officers and the necessary processes for this type of applications.”

Ortiz Nava, known as El ´Gato´, recognized his mistake and apologized to Concacaf. In addition, he accepted the sanction imposed by the entity, although the specific details of the disciplinary measure were not revealed.

The referee is expected to be disabled to lead over the next few weeks.

He could also face an economic fine, although Concacaf has not yet confirmed the exact punishment.
