US Skistar Shiffrin celebrates 100th World Cup victory

After two disappointing giant gate runs, Mikaela Shiffrin triumphs in Sestriere slalom. It is a historical success for the exceptional ski racer. Two Germans reach the top ten.

Skir racer Mikaela Shiffrin won the Sestriere slalom and celebrated her 100th World Cup victory. The American triumphed in Italy with more than half a second ahead of the Croatian Zrinka Ljutic. Third was Shiffrin’s teammate Paula Moltzan. For a long time, the 100 wins mark was considered unreachable. Shiffrin, the most successful driver of the World Cup history by far, has now cracked.

The best German was Emma Aicher in sixth place. Lena Dürr, the best German slalom driver for years, also made it into the top ten as seventh. Jessica Hilzinger took 29th place.

Strong reaction to giant slalom disappointments

They are emotional days for them again, said Shiffrin. It must be very mentally overcome in order to bring the desired performance onto the slopes. At the end of November she fell in the Killington giant slalom. In doing so, she had suffered a deep stab wound in the abdominal area that had to be operated on.

She still suffered mentally from the consequences of this accident, Shiffrin recently explained. In the two giant slaloms from Sestriere on Friday and Saturday, she had disappointed. Once she had turned 25, once not even got into the second round.

But the 29-year-old can continue to rely on her parade discipline. For a total of 63 times she won a World Cup slalom.
