March internationals: Gislason relies on Kohlbacher returnee
For the difficult games against Austria, the national handball coach relies on proven staff. Nevertheless, he also tries it with two young Berliners in the team.
Handball national coach Alfred Gislason continues to focus on his regular formation after the bitter World Cup in the quarter-finals against Portugal. In addition, in the international matches against Austria on March 13 (6 p.m.) in Vienna and two days later in Hanover (4.30 p.m.), he can rely on the recently injured circuit runner Jannik Kohlbacher from the Rhein-Neckar Löwen.
With the Berlin DHB debutant Tim Freihofer, the Icelandic coach on the left wing tries a new alternative. Left-handed Max Christoph Beneke from the Füchsen Berlin is also in the 18-member line-up for the qualification for the European Championship from January 15 to February 1, 2026 in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
Gislason relies on “stable foundation”
“Austria demanded ourselves extremely twice last year. We therefore need a stable foundation for the upcoming two games,” said Gislason. In doing so, he recalled the heavily won drawer in the World Cup round round and the decisive game of the Olympic qualification, in which the team around captain Johannes Golla just asserted itself last March.
