Ski jumping in Trondheim
“Wood medal” in the rain: German mixed series at WM ended
For the first time in twelve years, there is a mixed world champion in ski jumping, which is not called Germany. The quartet experiences a nasty surprise in the rain of Trondheim.
Katharina Schmid shrugged and left the run at the constant rain of Trondheim. The German ski jump-Mixed has lost its years of dominance in the World Cup Mixed and did not get a medal for the first time in the seventh edition of the competition. In the dominant victory of host Norway, Schmid, Philipp Raimund, Selina Freitag and Andreas Wellinger only finished fourth. 7.8 points and thus a little more than four meters were missing on Bronze winners Austria.
The seven -time world champion Schmid, who did not go beyond two jumps to 111.5 and 109 meters, was symbolic of the difficult day in the granases Skienter. “I couldn’t keep my position completely. The trail became rough, which makes it even more difficult for me,” said the 28 -year -old Allgäuer, who was there as a top performer in four out of five titles. Silver winners Slovenia around world champion Nika Prevc was too strong.
The German team allowed themselves too many weak jumps. Only Raimund (138 meters) and Wellinger (139 meters) increased significantly in the second round, but that was too late for a podium. “If you don’t win a medal, you are of course disappointed,” said national coach Stefan Horngacher in the ARD. Olympic champion Wellinger added: “For the moment it is stupid, you never want to go home as fourth.”
Horngacher and coaching colleague Heinz Kuttin saw the distances upwards grow up from jump to jump. The Norwegian quartet Anna Odine Ström, Marius Lindvik, Eirin Maria Kvandal and Johann André Forfang dominated the competition and, according to single gold from Lindvik and team gold of women on the normal hill, secured the third World Cup title. The Scandinavians celebrated with the state flag – fire fountains briefly brought light into the dark water.
A amazing series ends for Germany after 4392 days. In 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023, the quartet of the German Ski Association (DSV) each won gold – Japan won at the premiere in 2013. Germany won bronze.
“Everyone has left such a jump. The boys really attacked again,” commented Friday. “We made a few more mistakes. It’s a shame that it happened at the World Cup.” So only the “wooden medal” remained, as the 23 -year -old Saxon put it.
Second World Cup week without a medal
For the German ski jumping team, the fourth World Cup decision in Trondheim was the first without a medal. Previously, Friday and Wellinger had won a silver medal in singles and women around Friday bronze in the team from the normal hill. In the men’s team jumping on Thursday (4.20 p.m./ARD and Eurosport), Austria and Norway are favored.
Germany remains without a podium in the second week of competition. In addition to the ski jump-mixed, there were also four decisions in the cross-country ski run in which the team of national coach Peter Schlickenrieder had nothing to do with the medals. The Nordic combiners in the team competition have the best chances on Thursday.
