National coach Julian Nagelsmann brings Bayern professional Leon Goretzka back to the national soccer team after 16 months. The 30-year-old midfielder, whom Nagelsmann sorted out a year ago in his large personnel upheaval for the home European Championships, is part of the 23-player squad for the Nations League quarter-finals against Italy.

The only newcomer to the DFB contingent for the first leg on March 20 in Milan and the decisive second game three days later in Dortmund is a defender Yann Aurel Bisseck from Inter Milan.

“Leon has a very good phase in terms of sport,” said Nagelsmann, Goretzka’s comeback, who lasted in international matches for Germany in November 2023. After a difficult time, he fought back in “a major role” at FC Bayern. Before the appeal, he had “a good, clarifying conversation” with Goretzka, which was also about “creating a basis again”.

In addition to Goretzka, there are two other players who were no longer there for a long time: The formally strong midfielder Nadiem Amiri from the Bundesliga overrunation team FSV Mainz 05 can look forward to a nomination more than four years after his fifth and last international.

The Dortmund attacker Karim Adeyemi, who belonged to the squad at the 2022 World Cup, was first appointed by Nagelsmann. The winger benefits from the fact that some important offensive forces such as Florian Wirtz or Kai Havertz are injured. The offensive department also includes again after injuries to the Mainz Jonathan Burkardt and the Stuttgart Jamie Leweling.

Nagelsmann wants to move into the Nations League final Four with the national team against fear opponents Italy for the first time. The final round with four teams would be held in Germany with the venues in Munich and Stuttgart in Germany.
