Hess and Grimm at athletics World Cup behind the podium

Dreifinger Max Hess and all-rounder Vanessa Grimm are line just behind the podium at the start of the Hallen World Cup. European champions are also chosen to become world champions.

Three jumpers Max Heß and all-rounder Vanessa Grimm were unable to intervene in the medal fight at the start of the World Hall Championships in China. Eight years after silver in Portland and two weeks after his strong European Championship appearance, the Chemnitz Hess took sixth place under the hall roof by Nanjing. He was missing twelve centimeters for bronze gang with 17.03 meters. Grimm was better placed as a fourth in the pentathlon: the athlete from Königsteiner LV was 188 points behind the podium at 4,481 points.

Heß: has to criticize myself a little bit of criticism

The 28-year-old Hess remained well behind the width of 17.43 meters, with which he had won EM silver in the Netherlands two weeks ago. Such a jump would also have brought the second of the world year’s best list.

“I struggled with my technology today,” said Hess after his competition. “I didn’t quite hit the HOP-Step transition, which means that the jumps were not as far as in the past competitions. I have to criticize myself that I didn’t quite get it on the track today.”

European champions also win at the World Championships

As a world champion, Hallen European champion Andy Dìaz Hernandez cheered. The Italian won the world year’s best of 17.80 meters. Dìaz won in front of the Chinese Yaming Zhu (17.33 meters) and indoor world recordler Hugues Fabrice Zango from Burkina Faso (17.15). The Brazilian Almir Dos Santos, which was initially considered third, was disqualified hours later. According to the association, he had worn shoes that were not approved for the competition.

Grimm was allowed to be satisfied at the first start after her injury, although there was a “small damper” with the ball. “Fourth place at a World Cup is incredible,” said Grimm, who was only 13 points on the best performance. The title went to 21-year-old Finnin Saga Vanninen with 4,821 points.

Sprint double for British

Another European champion cheered like Dreifinger Dìaz. Two weeks after his European Championship title, Jeremiah Azu from Great Britain also won over 60 meters at the World Championships. The World Championships in China last until Sunday. The German Athletics Association is only represented with a small contingent in the title fights.
