Iran secures ticket for World Cup 2026
Iran’s national football team qualifies prematurely for the 2026 World Cup with the draw against Uzbekistan.
Iran’s national soccer team qualified prematurely for the final round of the 2026 World Cup. The FIFA world ranking 18. A 2: 2 (0: 1) against Uzbekistan in Tehran was enough to solve the ticket for the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. The team of coach Amir Ghalenoei can no longer be replaced by one of the first two places in group A of the Asia qualification on the remaining two match days. For Iran it is seventh participation in a World Cup.
Hojimat Erkinov brought the outsider from Uzbekistan in the lead in the 16th minute. Mehdi Taremi (52nd) achieved the compensation for the Iranians. Just a minute later, Abbosbek Fayzullaev brought the Uzbeken back into the lead. In the 83rd minute, Taremi again achieved the much acclaimed compensation for Iran.
After the draw, Uzbekistan is still in second place in the table and continues to have a good chance of solving a ticket for a World Cup finals for the first time.
For the upcoming World Cup, Japan had already qualified as the first teams in the Asia qualification and New Zealand in the Oceania zone. The three hosts USA, Canada and Mexico are set.
