Without a chance: Altmaier loses against Alcaraz
After the early end of Alexander Zverev, Daniel Altmaier was the last remaining German tennis professional in Monte-Carlo. But the world number third is one number too big.
Tennis professional Daniel Altmaier clearly missed a surprise against Carlos Alcaraz at the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte-Carlo. The 26-year-old from Kempen lost 3: 6, 1: 6 in the round of 16. Altmaier was the last remaining German at the clay court event after the early failure of the number one on number one.
The world ranking 84. Keep well against the great favorite Alcaraz until 3: 3 in the first set. Again and again Altmaier tried to surprise his opponent with stop balls. But Alcaraz could counter with his extra class. After a spectacular point win, which he initiated through his legs in one fell swoop, the 21-year-old was celebrated by the spectators.
Alcaraz can overtake Zverev
In the second set, the resistance of Altmaier was finally broken. Alcaraz dominated and made the clear victory perfect after 85 minutes. He now meets the Frenchman Arthur Fils.
With a title win in Monte-Carlo, the Spaniard would pass to Zverev in the world rankings and take over position two behind Jannik Sinner from Italy, who is currently serving a doping lock. Zverev had lost his first game against Matteo Berrettini from Italy in his adopted home.
