As of April, there is a threat of increases in benchmark and category rents of 8.6 percent, as these are adjusted for inflation. This applies above all to apartments in old buildings in Vienna. There should be a solution to tenancy law by April, said Justice Minister Alma Zadic. In the corona crisis, there were exceptions to rent increases.

The opposition parties SP and FP, the Chamber of Labor and the Federation of Trade Unions reiterated their demand for a rent cap yesterday, Wednesday. SP chief Pamela Rendi-Wagner called for rent increases to be suspended until 2026. After that, the annual rent increases should be capped at a maximum of two percent. The AK also wants such a cap.

Michael Pisecky, chairman of the specialist group for real estate and business trustees, is negative. Rents in Austria are “low anyway” in an international comparison, and there is no need for legal intervention. Agenda Austria is also skeptical.
