Finances: Customs officials monitor compliance with the minimum wage

From the car wash to the nail salon: Several hundred officers are on the road across Germany today – asking employees about their employment relationships.

Several hundred officials from the main customs offices are out and about throughout Germany in the morning to carry out priority checks to ensure compliance with the minimum wage.

All 41 main customs offices nationwide are involved in the controls, said a spokeswoman for the General Customs Directorate on Thursday of the German Press Agency in Hamburg. The colleagues in the financial control undeclared work are on the move across all sectors – from the car wash to the ice cream parlor to the nail salon. “It’s particularly about the sectors that are subject to the statutory minimum wage,” the spokeswoman continued.

Today, only the employees are to be asked about their employment relationships. The data collected in this way will finally be checked over the coming days and weeks. It will therefore only be possible to say something about the number of violations later. The General Customs Directorate has announced further information for the afternoon.
