Extinction Rebellion: IAA opponents cause traffic jams in Munich with abseiling action

The IAA motor show is controversial and has attracted numerous protests in the past. Numerous demonstrations are expected again this year.

Activists from the organization Extinction-Rebellion triggered traffic jams on Monday with an abseiling action over the Mittlerer Ring in Munich. In the late morning, two people abseiled down from a bridge right next to the BMW headquarters over the central road artery. The police allowed them to carry out the announced action. In both directions, the Mittlerer Ring was partially closed, causing obstructions.

On a banner, the activists, who were accompanied by a small group of demonstrators on the bridge, demanded “Climate protection instead of the IAA – money for public transport, not for the motorways”. The IAA opens on Tuesday and runs until the coming weekend. On Monday, the so-called press day, there were already numerous presentations for the media. The IAA is taking place in Munich for the second time this year. The fair is controversial and had already attracted numerous protests in 2021.
