Tourism: Number of overnight stays in October below pre-Corona levels

The number of guest overnight stays increased slightly in October compared to the same month last year. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office. Has this reached a level like before the pandemic?

A mixed October for tourism in Germany: At 44.6 million, the number of overnight stays was 1.2 percent above the same month last year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Monday. However, according to preliminary data from Wiesbaden statisticians, the pre-Corona level was missed by 2.3 percent. In the current year, the number of tourists in this country from the pre-pandemic year 2019 has only been exceeded in May and September.

The companies recorded a significant increase in guests from abroad in October compared to the same month last year: the number of overnight stays increased by 2.9 percent to 7.0 million within a year. However, it was still 9.8 percent below the pre-crisis level of October 2019. The number of overnight stays by guests from Germany in October of the current year was 37.6 million, 0.8 percent higher than the year before, but at the same time also 0.8 percent lower than in October 2019.

Due to restrictions during the corona pandemic, the number of guests temporarily collapsed, and tourists from abroad in particular stayed away. The statistics record overnight stays in hotels and other accommodation facilities with at least ten beds.
