In the first quarter, SME exports grew 2%: which items stood out

Exports reached US$2,157 million, 12.2% of the country’s total exports, according to the Argentine Confederation of Medium Enterprises (CAME).

The exports of the SME companies grew 2%, reaching US$2,157 million exported, which represents 12.2% of the total exported by the Argentine Republic in the first quarter of 2024, according to a report from CAME.

In volume, SMEs exported 1.9 million tons, 1.7% more than the accumulated first quarter of 2023. This similarity between growth in dollars and volume indicates a real increase in SME exports. With these values, SMEs exported, on average, $1,165 per ton in the first quarter.

Of the 3,645 companies that exported in the first quarter, 2,608 are SME companiesmeaning that, in the period analyzed, 71.6% of the operators are small and medium-sized companies.

This is how it arises from SME Export Monitor (MEP)an indicator prepared by the Statistics and Reports sector of the Argentine Confederation of Medium Enterprises (CAME), to measure the exports of small and medium-sized companies in the Argentine Republic.

SME exports: sector-by-sector analysis

The MEP analyzes 16 items that group the tariff positions from chapter 1 to 99 of the Mercosur Common Nomenclature, amendment 2024.

In the first quarter of the year, 9 of the 16 items analyzed showed falls, the tobacco and derivatives branch being the one with the greatest decrease (-88.4%). On the other hand, the sector with the greatest growth was oil and fuels (+80.7%), while, in USD, the greatest progress was that of unprocessed foods (+US$154.4 million).

33.8% (US$729.6 million) of the exports of Argentine SMEs were to South America as the main destination, highlighting Brazil and Chile as the main partners. The second most relevant continent for Argentine small and medium-sized companies is Asia (26.9%), where China, Russia and Israel are the main trading partners.
