With increases of up to 400% annually, transportation and communications lead the increases in the provinces

The items of Transportation and communications led the price increases in May in most provinces who published their own inflation index. Health was another segment that showed significant jumps, while the increase in food was particularly relevant in the City of Buenos Aires (CABA).

According to a survey by the Chaco consulting firm Politikon, in 4 of the 10 districts that publish a Provincial Consumer Price Index (CPI), “transportation and communications” led the increases in the fifth month of the year. These are cases of Jujuy (+381.4%), Córdoba (+346.7%), Chaco (+338.8%) and Santa Fe (+333.9%).

Likewise, in Neuquén and CABA The greatest variations were observed in “information and communications”, with increases of 354.3% and 348.1%, respectively. For its part, “transport” (whose measurement is separated from communications in both districts) ranked second in the Neuquén CPI and fourth in the Buenos Aires CPI.

Parallel, in Tucumán “transport” jumped 401.7%, thus becoming the highest price increase within all the categories included in the provincial CPI. “Information and communications” was the second category with the greatest increase in this district.

It is worth noting that these are two categories whose prices are mostly regulated by the State. That is why the magnitude of the variations is mainly linked to the adjustments in subsidies to transportation and deregulations carried out by the Government of Javier Milei.

All provinces showed a slowdown in inflation

Despite the high numbers, the Politikon report highlighted that All provinces showed a slowdown in their interannual inflation rate last May, something that had not happened since September 2020.

Four provincial indices were above that figure: Río Negro (+300.7%), Neuquén (+282.6%), Santa Fe (+282.2%) and CABA (+280.9%). On the contrary, the other six (Córdoba, Tucumán, San Luis, Jujuy, Mendoza and Chaco) showed increases below average.

In monthly terms, national inflation was 4.2%, the lowest figure since January 2022. At the provincial level, all increases were below 5%, with increases below 4% standing out in San Luis and Jujuy. Compared to April, the main decelerations were observed in CABA (-5.4 percentage points), Río Negro (-4.9 points) and Jujuy (-4.9 points).

In the accumulated of the first five months of 2024, there were three that exceeded the national average (+71.9%), highlighting inflation in CABA, which was the only one that exceeded 80%. At the other extreme, San Luis was the only one whose CPI rose below 60%.
