Around 20 percent of all cars were recently on the road with defects – and therefore failed the general inspection. For the Tüv report, the association also evaluated purely electric cars for the first time.

More than one in five cars recently failed the general TÜV inspection with “significant” or even “dangerous defects”. At 20.6 percent, this is roughly the same rate across all models and age groups as in the same period last year (20.5 percent), as the Tüv Association writes in the current Tüv report. If there are significant defects, the damage must be repaired within four weeks; if there are dangerous defects, they must be repaired immediately. Then you are only allowed to travel to the workshop.

Once again, around 15,000 vehicles were classified as “unsafe for traffic” and shut down on the spot. This was the case, for example, with torn brake lines, blocked steering or rust in load-bearing areas. However, in almost 80 percent of the vehicles examined, no or only minor defects were found.

E-cars were also evaluated for the first time

For the statistics, Tüv evaluated more than ten million general inspections that were carried out between July 2023 and June 2024. Around 230 different vehicle types were examined.

For the first time, Tüv also included ten purely electric models in the investigation. “Electric cars are – slowly but steadily – conquering the used car market,” said the managing director of the Tüv association, Joachim Bühler. “The main investigation shows: Electric vehicles are technically neither safer nor more unsafe than vehicles with combustion engines.” However, there are some drive-specific defects in electric cars – such as premature wear of axle suspensions due to the high weight of the batteries.
